"We blame killer's parents," is how the Sun reports comments by the "devastated mother of murdered Rhys Jones".

The Daily Mirror has a very similar front page - "we blame the parents", quoting Rhys's mother.

The paper also says the family is to move out of the Croxteth Park area of Liverpool, where the 11-year-old was shot dead on Wednesday.

The Guardian says Merseyside Police revealed Rhys may have been innocently caught in the crossfire of a gang war.

Troops abroad

The Times says that in a speech which was meant to remain secret, the head of the Army has ordered senior staff to prepare for a "generation of conflict".

Sir Richard Dannatt said if the Army fails in Iraq or Afghanistan, "tomorrow will be a very uncertain place".

The Independent says Afghanistan's Helmand province, patrolled by British troops, has had a record opium crop.

The result will be more heroin on the streets of the UK and it will help the Taleban fund its resistance, it adds.

Prescott announcement

The Daily Express describes a new setback in the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

It says that the DNA test results needed to unlock the case will not be ready for weeks.

Meanwhile, the Times reports on John Prescott's announcement that he is to quit as an MP at the next election - days after he dismissed the idea as "press prattle".

It says the ex-deputy PM is working on his memoirs and that one of his sons hopes to succeed him as Hull East MP.

Europe poll

The Daily Telegraph reports that Gordon Brown is facing growing calls from within the Labour party for a referendum on the EU Treaty.

The paper says there are several senior ministers among more than 120 Labour MPs who would back such a move.

Writing in the Sun, Conservative leader David Cameron says its readers should hold Labour to its promise for a vote.

The Daily Mail says ministers are hoping to be let off the hook by having another country vote down the treaty.
