Two police officers have been injured, one seriously, after their marked van crashed in Arbroath.

The incident happened just after 0500 BST as the pair were travelling in the Tayside Police Ford Transit van along the Guthrie Port road.

The vehicle struck the central reservation and rolled over before colliding with a Citroen Relay van travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the Citroen was not injured.

One of the officers, who has 27-years service with the force, was taken by ambulance under police escort to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

He is currently receiving treatment for head and facial injuries and a collapsed lung in the hospital's intensive care unit, where his condition is described as serious.

The other officer, who was travelling as a passenger in the van and has three years police service, is being treated for minor injuries.

The road was closed for several hours to allow accident investigators to examine the scene. Diversions were put in place.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Tayside Police in Angus on 01307 302200.
