A Stoke City footballer who was clocked doing 103mph in his Mercedes will face disciplinary action from the club.

Vincent Pericard, 24, was jailed for four months last week after admitting he had falsely claimed his stepfather was at the wheel at the time.

The former Juventus and Portsmouth striker was caught on the A38 near Plymouth last March.

The Cameroon-born player was charged after his stepfather Jack told police he had not been in the UK since 2003.

'Well-respected'

The court heard Pericard had been speeding while travelling from his Portsmouth home to a training session in Plymouth where he was playing for Plymouth Argyle on loan.

Football club leaders said they were unable to go into the details of what action Pericard will have to face.

Stoke chairman Peter Coates said Pericard was popular but had lessons to learn.

Mr Coates said: "I am not prepared to go into the disciplinary action we are going to take.

"He is well-liked and well-respected - he is a very nice young man. But he has done something very badly wrong on this occasion."
