A man has been taken to hospital following a fire at his home in a County Down town.

Fire crews wearing breathing equipment rescued the man from a ground floor flat at Bristol Park in Newtownards in the early hours of Sunday.

The man is being treated for the effects of breathing in smoke.

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Service warned that lives were being put at risk because smoke alarms were not working.
