A cyclist is being treated in hospital after he was injured in a hit-and-run incident in East Lothian.

The 28-year-old man was cycling along Elphinstone Road, Tranent, at 0235 BST when he was hit by a car.

Lothian and Borders Police said the driver of the car, thought to be a black Ford, did not stop to help but drove off.

The cyclist suffered a number of broken bones but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the car leaving the scene to come forward.

The spokesman said: "It is a quiet area just off the main A1, but there may have been people about."
