Two teenagers have been killed in Aberdeenshire after the car they were travelling in hit a tree.

Grampian Police said the 17-year-old male driver and his 16-year-old male passenger were fatally injured.

The crash happened on an unclassified road, half a mile north of the B9025 Turriff to Aberchirder road, near Knockiemill.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the crash which was reported at about 0800 BST on Saturday.

A Grampian Police spokesman said the car, which was travelling north, had left the road and hit a tree before coming to rest in a field.

Officers are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a silver Peugeot 106 being driven around the Turriff area in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The teenagers details will not be released until relatives have been informed.

The road was closed for several hours to allow collision investigators to carry out a detailed examination of the scene.

Anyone with information should contact Grampian Police on 0845 6005 700 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
