Director involved in fatal crash

Oscar-nominated film director John Singleton has been involved in a car accident in which a pedestrian died.

Mr Singleton, 39, who made 1991 movie Boyz N the Hood, was driving in Los Angeles when a woman stepped out in front of his Lexus SUV, police said.

He waited for police, who questioned and released him. He was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The woman, Constance Russell, 57, from Los Angeles, was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Mr Singleton was nominated for Oscars for best director and best original screenplay for Boyz N the Hood, his debut film.

He has since directed Poetic Justice, Shaft and 2 Fast 2 Furious, as well as producing Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan and Illegal Tender.
