A senior Pakistani paramilitary officer has been abducted along with two guards and a government official near the Afghan border, officials say.

They were seized at gunpoint by an unidentified group on Friday as they went to meet religious leaders in Ladha, South Waziristan.

Attempts are still being made to secure the release of 15 soldiers kidnapped in the region earlier in August.

Tribal unrest has grown since troops stormed a mosque in Islamabad in July.

Islamist militants had barricaded themselves inside the Red Mosque.

Sixty soldiers and about 250 Islamist militants have been killed in the tribal areas in just over a month, officials say.

A 16th soldier captured in South Waziristan was killed by his captors who are believed to be demanding the release of militants held by the government.
