'Palestinian gunmen' shot in Gaza Israeli forces kill three gunmen
(30 minutes later)
Two Palestinian gunmen have been shot dead by the Israeli army, a military spokesman says. Israeli troops have shot dead two Palestinian gunmen approaching a crossing from the northern Gaza Strip.
The army said they were killed as they attempted to cross the border into Israel from the northern Gaza Strip. Troops moved in after up to three gunmen appeared near the Erez crossing and opened fire, the military said. One Israeli soldier was lightly wounded.
Reuters said militant sources had confirmed the incident, but it was not clear which group was involved. The two men killed were on a "martyrdom operation" against Israel, a spokesman for a Palestinian militant group said.
In a separate incident in the West Bank, an Islamic Jihad militant was reported to have been killed and others injured in an Israeli raid. In the West Bank, Israeli forces killed at least one Palestinian militant when they opened fire on a car.
The Gaza clash was confirmed in statements by spokesmen for some of the smaller Palestinian militant groups, and it appears that the gunmen came from different groups.
Israeli troops have been searching the scene for signs of the third gunman.
In Jenin, the Israeli military killed an Islamic Jihad militant and seriously injured two others, Palestinian security sources said. Two by-standers were also hurt, one of them added.
According to the Israeli military, the three militants had two assault rifles and ammunition in the car.
