Teenagers missing in Cairngorms Teenagers missing in Cairngorms
(about 4 hours later)
Four teenage girls have been reported overdue in the Cairngorms. A search is continuing in the Cairngorms for four teenage girls who were reported overdue while taking part in a Duke of Edinburgh expedition.
The alarm was raised on Friday night when the girls, who are on a Duke of Edinburgh's award trek, failed to reach a rendezvous near Kinloch Laggan. They failed to arrive at a camp site near Loch Laggan on Friday night after hiking through the forests.
Poor conditions overnight meant a rescue helicopter was unable to search the area. However, the low cloud and rain is expected to clear later. Two of the girls are aged 16, the other two are 18. BBC Scotland understands they are all pupils at Perth Academy.
The girls - who are aged between 16 and 18 - are said to be well equipped. It is hoped they made camp for the night. A volunteer from the Duke of Edinburgh scheme said they were well equipped and they may have taken a wrong turn.
The RAF said the area where they are thought to be, has good tracks. The search was hampered by poor weather overnight.
Members of the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team and an RAF mountain rescue team are looking for the girls in the area of Feagour near Kinloch Laggan.
Rescuers are tracing the route that the girls were due to follow in the hope of finding them.
An RAF spokesman said: "We have the route that they were going to follow so that is a very good start as we can cover each part of that and hopefully there will be an innocent explanation."
