Four teenagers have appeared in court charged with the murder of a father-of-three outside his home.

Garry Newlove, 47, was fatally injured after he approached a group of youths in Station Road North in Warrington, Cheshire, on 10 August.

Mr Newlove, a sales manager, died from head injuries two days later.

Adam Swellings, 18, of Meredith Street, Crewe, appeared alongside three other youths, two aged 15 and one aged 17, at Warrington Crown Court.

Andrew Thomas, prosecuting, said a large number of young people may be called to give evidence at the trial.

'Press on'

The Recorder of Chester, Judge Elgan Edwards, issued an order banning identification of any juvenile witnesses.

He also made an order banning publication of any photograph of Swellings until further notice.

The trial is scheduled to start on 19 November at Chester Crown Court.

Judge Edwards said: "This is a case which has understandably caused great public concern and we must ensure, particularly with regard to the youth of the defendants, the feelings of the deceased's family and the public generally, we must press on and get a resolution."

All four defendants were remanded in custody until 19 October for a pre-trial review.

Mr Newlove's relatives and those of the accused were in court throughout the hearing.
