A man found dead lying in a London street was a drug mule who had swallowed more than 140 packages of class A drugs, say police.

He was discovered in Peartree Way, Greenwich in south-east London, earlier this month.

The man had swallowed up to 2kg of the drugs with a street value of about £125,000.

Post-mortem tests showed he died of intestinal obstruction. Police are asking for help in identifying him.

The man is described as black, about 40 years old and 5ft 10in tall.

He was wearing a navy blue suit, brown slip-on shoes and a bright-coloured pink and purple striped shirt.

Det Sgt Lauraine Greenhead said: "This is an unusually large amount to have ingested, and he must have died in considerable pain.

"He was wearing a plain gold ring on his wedding finger when found, so we feel sure he must have a family somewhere who know he is missing."

She added: "He also had a Virgin Nigeria airline baggage label in his pocket, so it is possible he had a connection with that country."
