Four men in their 20s and one in his mid-30s are being questioned on suspicion of attempted murder.

A woman in her 30s is also being held over the incident.

Both of the men in hospital are in conditions described as serious but not life-threatening.

Cars removed

Police community support officers have been patrolling the streets in the town reassuring people it was an isolated incident.

Assistant Chief Constable of Hertfordshire Police, Gary Kitching, said on Thursday they were confident they knew who was involved in the shooting.

Eyewitness Ellen Rose told the BBC she understood three shots had been fired following a collision involving two cars.

Recovery lorries arrived in Pixmore Avenue in the afternoon to remove a metallic green Volkswagen Golf and a silver Passat, thought to be involved in the shooting.
