Officers said no-one had been hurt and the cause of the fire was being investigated. West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) said the fire was now under control but part of the building had collapsed. No-one is thought to have been hurt.
They said the road was due to stay shut throughout the morning rush hour and advised drivers to avoid the area. The road is expected to remain shut for some time.
Eyewitnesses said there had been "substantial damage" to the Cash Converters shop, in York Road. Dave Janes, from WMFS, said it was "far too early" to say what had caused it but said the collapse of the building in York Road was likely to hamper that investigation.
