A three-year-old girl who has an airgun pellet lodged in her brain after being shot by her sister is now "up and walking" in hospital, doctors say.

Detectives said Somma Chapman was in an upstairs bedroom watching a DVD when the accident happened on Monday evening at the Normacot Hotel, Stoke-on-Trent.

Specialists said on Thursday she was showing good signs of recovery.

Doctors have said they hope the pellet, in the centre of Somma's brain, will not have to be removed.

They have said the pellet may cause no problem at all to the toddler, and would only risk causing more damage by carrying out surgery.

Police said they were still working to find the airgun's owner.

On Tuesday specially-trained officers spoke to Somma's six-year-old sister about the incident and said they were still trying to establish how the airgun was fired.
