Afghan governor survives bombing Taleban in remote Afghan assault
(about 7 hours later)
The governor of the south-eastern Afghan province of Khost, Arsala Jamal, has survived a suicide bomb attack on his convoy, officials say. The Taleban have attacked a Nato base in eastern Afghanistan, injuring 11 foreign soldiers and killing two Afghan troops, military officials say.
But at least two of Mr Jamal's bodyguards were killed in the attack, which was close to a base for Western troops just outside the town of Khost. A spokesman for Nato's International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) told the BBC that the attack happened in the remote Hindu Kush mountains.
Officials for the governor told the BBC the bomb went off close to his car. He said it began early on Wednesday morning in Nuristan Province.
Mr Jamal said in June that he had survived three suicide attacks, including one by a 14-year-old boy. Meanwhile the governor of Khost province has survived a suicide attack - the fourth such attempt on his life.
The child, Rafiq, was later publicly pardoned by President Hamid Karzai.

Correspondents say that the Taleban are now copying tactics used by Iraqi insurgents, which include suicide attacks and roadside bombs. Unchallenged
About 20 people, mostly civilians, were killed in two separate suicide attacks at the weekend in the southern city of Kandahar. Mr Jamal said in June that he had survived three suicide attacks, including one by a 14-year-old boy.
The child, Rafiq, was later publicly pardoned by President Hamid Karzai.
Isaf said that the Nuristan attack was on a US-run compound, and lasted for hours.
They said that the Taleban who attacked were wearing Afghan National Army uniforms, which allowed them to approach the base unchallenged.
In another incident on Wednesday, the influential mayor of the Helmand town of Gereshk was abducted along with his son by suspected Taleban insurgents.
