The Task Force Lightning helicopter was one of two Blackhawks carrying out a night operation, the military added. The crash was the one of the deadliest single incidents since the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.
The 14 soldiers killed on Wednesday were part of Task Force Lightening.
A second Blackhawk helicopter had been flying alongside them at the time.
It is not known precisely where the helicopter crashed, but the statement was issued by Multinational Division-North, which is based in Tikrit.
