Police and forensic officers on Monday night spent several hours at the scene, which is in a gated block of flats in east Belfast close to the city centre.
The police have declined to comment on reports that the victim had been dismembered and the remains left in a wheelie bin.
It is understood, however, that investigating officers have not, so far, been able to identify the victim or establish whether the body is that of a man or a woman.
