University students in Bangladesh have fought running battles with riot police in the capital, Dhaka.

The protesters threw stones and set fires across the campus, while police responded by using batons and tear gas. At least 50 students were injured.

The demonstrators were chanting slogans against the emergency government, which has been in power since January.

The military-backed cabinet has vowed to stamp out corruption, but discontent has been rising in recent months.

The trouble was sparked by an argument between a group of students and members of an army unit that has been garrisoned at the university since January, the BBC's John Sudworth in Dhaka says.

It quickly degenerated into a full-scale riot - in defiance of the emergency laws against gatherings and protests.

The students told our correspondent they wanted the army to leave the university and withdraw from politics.
