Postage is to be free for parcels sent to British troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, the BBC has learnt.

It is understood that Royal Mail will announce the decision shortly.

Over the weekend, the head of the British Army, General Sir Richard Dannatt said it was "irritating" that soldiers' families were charged.

The 'move' comes after many relatives signed a petition asking the government to pick up the bill for sending post to troops based overseas.
