Tesco transfers 2,000 depot jobs in depot restructure | |

Supermarket Tesco is restructuring its distribution system in the UK with the closure of three centres and the transfer of 2,000 jobs. | |
The supermarket said the posts would be moved to two new centres in Berkshire and Essex. | |
Centres to close are Harlow in Essex with the loss of 800 jobs, Barlborough near Chesterfield where 400 people work and Weybridge in Surrey with 650 staff. | |
Magor in Monmouthshire which employs 800 people will be cutting 150 staff. | |
'Broken promises' | |
The Usdaw union national officer Joanne McGuinness said: "This is absolutely devastating news for our members and their families. | |
"Usdaw will be entering into a 90-day consultation with Tesco to explore all possible options to reduce any job losses." | |
The new centres will be at Reading in Berkshire and Dagenham is Essex. | |
The company says all those people whose current jobs are being lost will be offered new employment within Tesco. | |
A spokesperson said: "We've been reviewing our distribution network, and have confirmed plans to close some of our current distribution centres and open new ones. | |
"Colleagues who are affected will be offered jobs at other Tesco sites, including at the two new distribution sites in Reading and Dagenham, where 2,000 jobs will be created." | |
