Version 0 of 1.

The life and career of the distinguished journalist and former Cabinet minister, Lord Deedes, are celebrated in the Daily Telegraph.

The paper, where his by-line appeared for more than 70 years, features the headline: "A giant of journalism dies, working to the last".

The paper says he was a source of common sense and humanity in an era of disorientating change.

It also notes that he had the most perfect manners of any journalist.

'Thatcherite baggage'

The proposals by a Conservative policy group for sweeping cuts in taxes fill many editorial columns.

For the Independent, the report presented by former Conservative Cabinet minister John Redwood is weighed down by Thatcherite baggage.

The Guardian also dismisses it as a series of old right-wing chants. However, the Daily Mail sees it as the red meat of proper Toryism at last.

The Sun agrees, saying it gives the party a realistic chance in the polls.

'New clues'

The latest developments in the hunt for missing Madeleine McCann also feature.

According to the Daily Express, forensic experts in Portugal have six new clues which they believe will provide a significant breakthrough.

The Daily Mirror says the four-year-old's parents, Gerry and Kate, have now told their two-year-old twins their sister has gone missing.

The Daily Mail says the news adds to a number of signals that the couple are planning to return to Britain soon.

'Weapon find'

According to the Times, three children playing near a prison found a bag containing a sawn-off shotgun, 20 cartridges and two balaclavas.

The paper claims the discovery in dense undergrowth has whipped up speculation they could have foiled a planned escape from Frankland jail in Durham.

It says the mother of one of the boys alerted police when her son brought the weapon home.

Detectives are now investigating the find, the paper claims.
