One person has died and up to eight others are believed to be missing after a serious fire at a hotel in Cornwall. One person has died and six people are missing after a fire at a hotel in Cornwall caused the building to collapse.
Emergency services are still trying to find up to eight of the 80 guests who were staying at the Penhallow Hotel in Newquay. Some residents were forced to jump to safety as the blaze swept through the Penhallow Hotel in Newquay.
Three adjacent buildings, also described as hotels, were evacuated as a precaution after the fire, which broke out just after midnight. Fire crews had to withdraw when parts of the structure gave way and investigators have not ruled out that some of the missing may be inside.
It took 100 firefighters over three hours to bring the blaze under control. More than 80 people managed to get out of the building.
Ted Stimpson, deputy chief constable of Devon and Cornwall Police, said the search for the missing guests would continue and has urged people in the area to stay away from the scene for their own safety. Senior divisional officer Colin Hatch said 23 appliances were sent to the scene of the fire which broke out just after midnight.

The fire spread to four floors of the building which is now described as being structurally unstable because of the fire which took more than 100 firefighters three hours to bring under control. Mr Hatch said the four storey building was in danger of complete collapse and this was making it difficult to completely extinguish the smaller fires.

BBC correspondent David George firefighters had been tackling the blaze with 14 appliances and two aerial platforms.
"There's little left of the front aspect of the building, a four storey hotel," he said.
"There's a large gap in the middle of that, sparks are still flying and smoke pouring from the building."
