On Tuesday Mr Pistorius told the bail hearing that he loved Reeva Steenkamp and had never intended to kill her.
In a statement read to the court, Mr Pistorius - who is a double amputee - said he woke in the middle of the night and thought he heard an intruder in his bathroom. As the prosecution began setting out its case on Wednesday, it said a witness had testified to hearing "non-stop talking like fighting" between the hours of 02:00 and 03:00.
In pitch darkness, he said he took a pistol from beneath his bed. After screaming for the intruder to leave, he said he fired four shots through the door. Mr Pistorius claims he was asleep until only moments before the shooting and that there was no argument between the couple.
Mr Pistorius claimed he was not wearing his prosthetic legs during this time, and that this made him feel "extremely vulnerable". He says he is able to move on his stumps. Ms Steenkamp was "dressed" at the time of the shooting, the prosecution said.
Only after shooting did he realise Ms Steenkamp was not still in his bed, the statement said. He broke down the bathroom door and discovered her body. The chief investigating officer Hilton Botha then took the stand, saying he arrived at the house at 04:15 and found Ms Steenkamp lying dead on the ground floor.
"She died in my arms," the statement said. "I am absolutely mortified at the death of my beloved Reeva." She was wearing white shorts and a black vest and was covered in towels, he said.
Oscar Pistorius wept as his affidavit was read out in court. Mr Botha said a memory stick was recovered with details of Mr Pistorius's offshore bank accounts - and claimed that made him a flight risk.
'Pre-planning' "We don't want another Dewani case," he said - referring to Shrien Dewani, who is in the UK fighting extradition to South Africa where he is wanted on charges of plotting to kill his wife Anni in 2010.
But his account was disputed by the prosecution, who said the couple may have argued before the shooting. He said Ms Steenkamp had been shot in the right side of her head, her right hip and her right elbow.
"There is no possible explanation to support his report that he thought it was a burglar," prosecutors said. Mr Pistorius has once again begun crying, says the BBC's Andrew Harding in the courtroom.
"It was all part of the pre-planning. Why would a burglar lock himself inside the bathroom?" prosecutor Gerrie Nel told the court.
The prosecution claims that in fact Mr Pistorius put on his prosthetic legs and walked seven metres before shooting Ms Steenkamp through the closed bathroom door - details that showed the murder was premeditated.
