Sri Lanka: Navy Rescues 32 Survivors From Sinking Ship | |
(35 minutes later) | |
The Sri Lankan Navy rescued 32 people traveling from Myanmar who were aboard a sinking ship, but the survivors said that they had to throw the bodies of 98 others overboard after they died of starvation and dehydration, Sri Lanka’s police said Monday. The rescue took place on Saturday about 290 miles off Sri Lanka’s eastern coast. The survivors said they were headed to Indonesia and Australia to seek asylum and identified themselves as Muslims from a border village between Myanmar and Bangladesh, said a police spokesman, Prishantha Jayakody. “They said they had carried food and water for only one month and they had been in the sea for two months after the ship engine stalled,” Mr. Jayakody said. “Their captain and 97 others have died due to dehydration and starvation. They also said they had thrown the dead bodies into the sea.” | The Sri Lankan Navy rescued 32 people traveling from Myanmar who were aboard a sinking ship, but the survivors said that they had to throw the bodies of 98 others overboard after they died of starvation and dehydration, Sri Lanka’s police said Monday.
