Det Insp Graham Atherton said: "This was a horrendous attack on a defenceless man which has left him fighting for his life in hospital." The victim is in hospital with serious injuries to his arms and his neck.
The victim is receiving treatment in hospital for stab wounds and his condition is described as very serious. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
His attackers are described as white, with one wearing a pale pink or red top with his face covered, and the other wearing a pale blue top with stripes down the sleeves. Det Insp Jon Keeley said the victim was stabbed 12 times.
Police said the two men approached the victim on the doorstep and before demanding his car keys stabbed him multiple times and "left him for dead". He added: "There is no history between the offenders and the victim - it appears to simply be a case of an extremely violent robbery by criminals desperate for the vehicle."
DI Atherton added: "I am sure local residents will be shocked and angered by what has happened, but I want to try to reassure them that we have a team of experienced detectives working on the investigation and are determined to find the men responsible."
