South Yorkshire motorway crash leaves two seriously injured A1(M) crash: Man arrested as lorry driver dies
(about 4 hours later)
Part of a motorway in South Yorkshire was closed for several hours after two people were injured in a crash. One man died and two others sustained life-threatening injuries in a multi-vehicle collision in South Yorkshire.
Police said a car and a lorry were in collision on the A1(M) northbound between junctions 36 and 37 at about 06:00 GMT. A Vauxhall Astra and a lorry collided at 06:10 GMT on the A1(M) near Marr, Doncaster, between junctions 36 and 37.
Shortly afterwards they received reports of another crash involving a car and three lorries in the same area. Another truck pulled up on the hard shoulder but a third HGV crashed into his vehicle. The driver of the third lorry was killed and two of his passengers were injured.
Two people suffered serious injuries in the second crash, police said. The carriageway has since reopened. Police said the car driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "The driver of the Vauxhall Astra, a 26-year-old man from Doncaster, has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving."
The northbound carriageway eventually reopened at about 14:00 GMT.
The driver of the third lorry was a 47-year-old man from Leeds.
Two of his passengers are fighting for their lives in hospital. They are a 58-year-old man from Redditch, Worcestershire, who is at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, and a 35-year-old man from Bedford, who is at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.
