It said residents in the immediate vicinity of Sallowfield Road should still keep doors and windows closed as a precautionary measure. Tony Bryan, fire service hazardous materials officer, said an initial assessment of nearby houses showed no spread of contaminants.
The fire service said the fire had engulfed all three floors of the derelict mill by the time it arrived. He said: "We have identified some asbestos within the structure [of the factory] - but that has been contained into the area as it was covered by metal sheeting.
"Having assessed the immediate area downwind from the fire, I've deemed that it is safe."
