Families leave homes in south Belfast overnight alert Device found in south Belfast was a 'viable' bomb
(about 9 hours later)
A number of families had to leave their homes in south Belfast in an overnight security alert. An explosive device found in south Belfast on Thursday evening was viable, police have said.
It followed the discovery of a suspicious object at Kitchener Street just off the Donegall Road on Thursday evening. "It had the potential to cause serious harm," said Chief Inspector Gabriel Moran.
Army bomb experts were called to the scene. Residents were allowed to return to their homes. Several families had to leave their homes after the object was found at Kitchener Street.
The road is closed, however the area where the alert is remains cordoned off. "Many residents were older members of the community for whom this would have been distressing especially given the time of night," said CI Moran.
He asked anyone with information to talk to police.
