A Moscow district court on Thursday arrested a participant in a protest last May on charges of rioting and attacking the police. Investigators said they had video evidence that the protester, Ilya Guschin, 24, grabbed a police officer by his uniform and tried to throw him to the ground during a confrontation between hundreds of demonstrators and the police in Moscow. If convicted of both charges, he could be sentenced to up to 13 years in prison. Mr. Guschin is one of 20 people facing similar charges after nine months of investigations into the protests against Vladimir V. Putin shortly before he returned to the presidency. In November, a man who confessed to chipping an officer’s tooth during the skirmish was sentenced to four and a half years in a prison colony. |
