A five-month-old baby girl whose nose and mouth were allegedly bitten off by her father 10 days ago has died in the Indian state of Rajasthan.

An allegedly drunk Bahadur Singh first assaulted his wife Santosh and then chewed off the nose and upper lip of the infant, police said.

The father has been arrested and will be charged with murder, they said.

Mr Singh is yet to comment on the allegations. The incident took place in Siyana village in Bikaner district.

The infant was first admitted to a hospital in Bikaner, but was later shifted to the state capital, Jaipur.

Last week, doctors at the Jaipur hospital conducted plastic surgery to repair the infant's nose, cheek and upper lip.

"The condition of the baby deteriorated last [Tuesday] night after she was breastfed by her mother," the Press Trust of India quoted a spokesperson of the Sawai Man Singh Government Hospital as saying on Wednesday morning.

"The milk entered into her lungs, following which some complications developed and she was put on ventilator support, but she died," he said.
