North east placed on flood alert

The north east of Scotland has been placed on flood alert ahead of predicted heavy rain.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) said rainfall of up to 60mm was possible in some areas.

Officials have been readied to watch rivers and coastlines around the clock for the next two days. Strong winds are also expected.

The warning is particularly worrying for Pennan, which is trying to recover from mudslides caused by heavy rain.

The latest problems are expected to be caused by the predicted arrival on Tuesday of an area of low pressure that has already swept across England.

Aberdeen and surrounding areas are expected to be among the worst affected. Moray Council is also keeping an eye on the situation.

The Met Office said it did not expect conditions to improve until Thursday.
