A post-mortem examination will be carried out on the girl in due course. Police confirmed that a woman in her 20s was arrested on suspicion of harassment in the local area on 8 August.
Local councillor Joan Rawlinson described the stabbing as dreadful. A spokeswoman said they had been called to deal with the same woman on Saturday, but she was not arrested.

A spokeswoman for Barking and Dagenham Council said: "The mother was brought to our attention on August 8.
"On August 9 mental health assessments were carried out by North East London Mental Healthcare Trust. She was found not to have any mental healthcare issues." The spokeswoman said the woman had lived in the borough since lastyear.
