The family of a teenager found dead while on holiday in Greece are awaiting post mortem examination results to establish how he died.

Brendan McCoey, 18, from Cullyhanna in County Armagh was on a vacation in Crete when the tragedy occured.

The 18-year-old was found at the bottom of a hotel swimming pool on the Mediterranean island on Sunday.

He and a group of about eight friends arrived in Crete from Northern Ireland last Friday.

Local priest Fr Kevin Cullen said Mr McCoey was a builder who "enjoyed life and had plenty of friends".

"He had his life together and he was a young fella growing up," he said.

"His family are devastated, they are waiting for the post mortem results and he won't be home for another week."

Sinn Fein councillor Terry Herty, who knows the McCoey family, said the entire community of Cullyhanna was shocked.

"There were eight friends from the area, so there are a lot of people affected," he said.

SDLP councillor Geraldine Donnelly said: "My heart goes out to Brendan's family and friends on hearing this sad and tragic news.

"My thoughts and prayers are with all those who were on holiday with Brendan, no-one can imagine the grief his family and friends are going through at this sad time."
