Lockerbie farmer, Robin Spence, who had known Mr Davidson for more than 30 years, said he was a well respected figure within the sector and would be sorely missed.
"Willie was a stalwart of the farming industry throughout his career - in the Young Farmers, NFU Scotland and local shows," he said.
He said Mr Davidson had rebuilt his cattle and sheep stock after it was wiped out by foot-and-mouth disease in 2001.
He was then part of a steering group helping other farmers affected by the crisis.
"He was involved in so many different facets of it and it is such a tragedy it has been cut short," added Mr Spence.
He said Mr Davidson's "ready wit" and "insightful comments" would be missed.
