For the record
http://www.guardian.co.uk/theobserver/2013/jan/27/for-the-record Version 0 of 1. In "Say no to a bus pass if you have any conscience" (Comment, 13 January, page 36), we misread figures when we said: "Since the war, welfare expenditure as a proportion of GDP has risen from 35% to 47%." That rise actually applies to total government expenditure, not welfare. In 1951, welfare amounted to 4.7% of Britain's GDP. In 2010, it had reached 7.2%. Apologies. "Leveson's regulator faces taste test" (Media, last week, page 50) was incorrect to state: "Ireland doesn't allow third-party or group complaints." The Press Council of Ireland's code of practice states that "newspapers and magazines shall not publish material intended or likely to cause grave offence or stir up hatred against an individual or group on the basis of their race, religion, nationality" etc. And the press ombudsman of Ireland allows third-party complaints under certain conditions. Food pictures in "Ten chefs take the OFM challenge" (Food Monthly, pages 18-29) were credited to Karen Thomas but they were actually by Jean Cazals. Apologies. And a picture of Grace Kelly last week should have carried this credit: Photographed by Erwin Blumenfeld, New York, 1955. © The Estate of Erwin Blumenfeld ("Galleries playing it safe", News, page 5). Write to Stephen Pritchard, Readers' Editor, the Observer, Kings Place, 90 York Way, London N1 9GU, tel 020 3353 4656 or email reader@observer.co.uk |
