A suspicious object discovered close to where an an off-duty police officer fired shots during an incident in Omagh, County Tyrone, on Friday night has been described as a "viable explosive device". Police in Northern Ireland say a crude viable explosive device has been found in Omagh, County Tyrone.
The shooting happened on the Kevlin Road. It is understood the device was discovered close to the home of a serving PSNI officer in the Coolnagard area of the town on Saturday afternoon.
No-one was injured and the police ombudsman has been informed. Officers were conducting a follow-up investigation into an incident in the same area where an off-duty police officer fired a number of shots.
Police conducting a follow-up investigation discovered the device and a number of homes were been evacuated. No one was injured in the incident on the Kevlin Road on Friday evening.
DUP MLA Thomas Buchanan said: I have no doubt it is a worrying time for the police officer and for his family given the situation that we are in today where there is a dissident threat which is severe." Detectives say they want to speak to anyone in the area who noticed anything out of the ordinary between the hours of 08:00 GMT and midnight on Friday as well as over the past number of months.
Some local residents have been moved from their homes. Sinn Fein West Tyrone MLA Declan McAleer has said people living in the area are annoyed at what's happened.
'I spoke to several of the evacuated residents and they are very concerned that such a sinister incident involving the discharge of a firearm and a suspicious device has taken place in their community," said Sinn Fein West Tyrone MLA Declan McAleer. A number of homes were evacuated but residents have since been allowed to return.
"Coolnagard is a very quiet residential area of the town where people from all sections of the community live side by side and where community relations are very good," he said. The Police Ombudsman has been informed about the shots being fired.
