Some schools were forced to close earlier and police have been called to several road collisions and reports of vehicles getting stuck. Up to 15cm (6in) of snow has fallen across parts of northern England since Friday afternoon.
Several minor roads are impassable and there are lane closures on the M6 through the county. Police were called to reports of motorists stuck in snow on the A590 at Lindale and on the A592 by the side of Windermere.
Snow was expected to move eastwards overnight. The Bay Search and Rescue team has been helping to get vehicles moving.
Falls of up to 2ins (5.1cm) were forecast for lower ground, with double that amount over the fells. Temperatures will steadily rise to an average of 4C later before reaching more than 10C in the south on Sunday followed by wet and windy weather next week, forecasters said.
