Two Belgians have gone missing in an area of south-eastern Iran where tourists have been kidnapped before.

They disappeared near the town of Fahraj, between Bam and Zahedan, Iran's state news agency Irna said.

Bam governor Majid Etemadi told Irna that they went missing on Sunday and a search for them was under way.

The area is used by gangs smuggling drugs from Pakistan and Afghanistan. Armed smugglers have clashed with Iranian security forces there before.
