Prime Minister Janez Jansa Refuses to Resign | |
(about 1 hour later) | |
Prime Minister Janez Jansa on Thursday refused to step down despite the breakup of his governing coalition, saying that an election now would hurt Slovenia as it struggled to avoid an international bailout. Mr. Jansa said he would stay on until he was removed from the post by a parliamentary no-confidence vote or as the result of a wider political agreement. “Slovenia cannot afford to hold early elections at this point,” he said. “We have a government with full authority.” The Civic List party quit the coalition on Wednesday after Mr. Jansa refused to resign over accusations of corruption against him. | Prime Minister Janez Jansa on Thursday refused to step down despite the breakup of his governing coalition, saying that an election now would hurt Slovenia as it struggled to avoid an international bailout.
