3 Injured in Shooting at College in Houston
(35 minutes later) | |
HOUSTON — At least three people were injured on Tuesday in a shooting at a college in Houston, the authorities said. At least one suspect was in custody.
Officials at the North Harris campus of Lone Star College announced an evacuation at 12:52 p.m. on its Web site, citing an incident involving “a couple of armed suspects.”
Harris County Sheriff’s Department vehicles blocked access to the roads leading to the college on Tuesday afternoon. Students gathered in groups outside an off-campus bookstore near the college, located in northern Harris County about 30 minutes outside downtown Houston.
Joshua Flores, a senior, said he was standing outside the cafeteria with friends at about 12:30 p.m. when they heard gunshots. He did not believe that the sounds were gunshots at first. “We thought it was fireworks, so we didn’t go anywhere,” said Mr. Flores, 21. “And then a bunch of people came running our way, yelling, ‘The guy has a gun – run, run!’ These were students.”
Mr. Flores and his friends went back inside the cafeteria. “We basically hid inside the cafeteria,” he said.
He and his friends later walked back to a nearby academic building, which was the area where they had heard the gunfire coming from. “There was a janitor,” he said. “A janitor got shot on the side of his leg. He was wearing his uniform.”
“I couldn’t believe this is happening,” he said. “I heard the gunshots, but I couldn’t believe it was gunshots.”
Mr. Flores took a short video with his iPhone of the scene he saw outside an academic building on campus. In the video, shell casings are visible on the pavement, scattered about like cigarette butts. “I heard roughly about six shots,” Mr. Flores said.
Two injured patients were taken to Ben Taub General Hospital, according to Melinda Muse, a spokeswoman for the Harris County Health System.
The Lone Star College system has about 90,000 students at six campuses, according to the college’s Web site. It is the largest higher-education institution in Houston and the fastest-growing community college system in Texas, according to the Web site.
