Detectives investigating the murder of an off-duty police officer from Greater Manchester have been given more time to question two suspects.

Gareth Francis, 28, was walking home from a night out when he was attacked in Castle Street, Edgeley, Stockport, at 01:20 GMT on Sunday.

He was taken to hospital with a serious head injury but died later.

Police are questioning two men aged 20 and 21. A third man has been bailed until 28 January.

A post-mortem examination found Mr Francis died from a head injury following a single punch.

He had joined the force in 2007 as part of a South Manchester Division neighbourhood team.

He then moved to Wythenshawe to work as a response officer.
