Child abuse officers are carrying out an investigation into the "suspicious" death of a 17-month-old boy.

The infant was taken to North Middlesex Hospital, in Enfield, north London, on 3 August and died later that day.

Staff became concerned and alerted police who arrived and arrested a 25-year-old woman at the hospital. A 31-year-old man was arrested later.

Both were bailed pending further inquiries. Haringey Council has launched an investigation.

The arrested pair are next due to see police later this month.

Review

A post-mortem examination was carried out on the boy at Great Ormond Street Hospital on 6 August but was inconclusive.

Police are awaiting the results of further tests.

A Met police spokesman said officers from the child abuse unit were investigating and were treating the death as suspicious.

A spokesman for Haringey Council said he could not confirm the child was on their "at risk" register.

He added: "We can confirm that an independent multi-agency serious case review has been commissioned by the local Safeguarding Children Board, as is routine in circumstances like this."
