A caller had claimed a friend had been left dangling on a cliff face while trying to retrieve a fishing rod just after 2300 BST at Ogmore on Saturday.

Lifeboats, a rescue helicopter and mountain rescue teams were sent to the scene.

The coastguard said it became clear as the evening went on the call was fake.

A spokesman said details of the incident had been passed onto South Wales Police.
