Although it was snowing hard, a small but high-powered group of broadcasters attended Alasdair Milne's funeral service on Friday at the Church of Scotland's St Columba church in Knightsbridge, London. Tim Davie, acting director general, led the BBC side, which included Alan Yentob and the former BBC television managing director and chairman, (Lord) Michael Grade. Ros Sloboda, Milne's secretary at the BBC when he was forced out in 1987, said: "His son, [Guardian assistant editor] Seumas Milne spoke brilliantly, full of love, everyone clapped. It was heartbreaking. I kept in touch with him and spoke to him a week before he died, on the phone. He was a lovely man, his own worst enemy, but he never understood why he had been treated this way, he couldn't come to terms with it, that restlessness was constant, he turned it over and over in his mind."
