(35 minutes later)
An explosion followed by gunfire has been heard in the Afghan capital, Kabul. A suicide attack has been launched on a police building in the west of the Afghan capital, Kabul, officials say.
An attack was launched near a border police building on the road to the parliament in the west of the city, residents told the AFP news agency. Police sources speak of several suicide bombers and gunmen being involved in the attack, which is still continuing.
Police sources quoted by Reuters news agency said it was a suicide attack. There are reports of loud explosions in and around the building and heavy gunfire.
The Taliban have claimed responsibility for a number of attacks in the city, most recently on National Directorate of Security last week. The Taliban have claimed responsibility for a number of attacks in the city, most recently on the National Directorate of Security last week.
The attack involved one suicide bomber and at least one gunman, but it was not immediately clear if there were any casualties, the head of the criminal investigation department of Kabul police, Mohammad Zahir, told Reuters. At least one militant blew himself up outside the traffic police headquarters just before dawn, and a number of others wearing suicide vests entered the building, police officer Mirzal Mohammad told the Associated Press news agency.
Militant groups continue to mount regular attacks in Afghanistan, raising questions as to how the Afghan security forces will cope after international troops leave the country in 2014.
