UK soldier killed in Afghanistan

A soldier from the 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment has been killed in Afghanistan, according to the Ministry of Defence.

The soldier was killed on Friday during a routine patrol in the area of Jusyalay, north east of Sangin, in Helmand Province.

The patrol, which was on its way to check on a local irrigation project, came under fire from Taleban fighters.

The dead soldier's next of kin have been informed.

Another soldier was also injured in the battle, which took place shortly before 0600 hours local time (0930 BST) but his condition is not life-threatening.

The deceased soldier was pronounced dead at the scene from head injuries.

Both were flown to the ISAF medical facility at Camp Bastion.

This latest death brings the total number of UK troops killed while on operations in Afghanistan since 2001 to 69.
