Egypt: Train Crash Kills 19 Conscripts, Leading to Antigovernment Protests | Egypt: Train Crash Kills 19 Conscripts, Leading to Antigovernment Protests |
(35 minutes later) | |
A speeding train derailed outside of Cairo on Tuesday, killing 19 military conscripts, most in their early 20s, and injuring more than 100. The train’s last car jumped the track just before dawn, slammed into a parked train, and then was dragged for several miles. The car was torn to pieces, young recruits were hurled out of the train, and others were mangled. Hundreds of protesters massed in Cairo’s main train station, expressing anger at President Mohamed Morsi for failing to carry out reforms or overhaul the country’s crumbling public services. The recruits were coming from some of Egypt’s poorest villages to serve in one of the worst jobs of the security forces, as troops in an antiriot force usually deployed against protesters. |
