Israeli raid on Gaza kills five Nine die in air strikes on Gaza
(about 18 hours later)
Five Palestinians have been killed during an Israeli raid in the Gaza Strip, reports say. A day of Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip has left nine people dead, including at least four Hamas militants and two children, reports say.
Medics and security officials said a teenage bystander and at least three gunmen were killed during the clashes in the early hours of Thursday morning. A missile hit a Hamas official's house after nightfall, but the target survived and two adults and a girl aged 10 died, Palestinian sources said.
The Israeli army confirmed that clashes were continuing in a village to the east of Khan Younis. Earlier, a boy aged 14, four militants and another person died in an Israeli air attack in southern Gaza.
Israel launched an offensive against militants in Gaza after gunmen seized a soldier in a cross-border raid in June. Israel confirmed both attacks, saying it had been targeting militants.
Israeli soldiers, supported by helicopter gunships, entered the village of Abassan in the early hours of Thursday morning. There have been frequent raids on the Gaza Strip since an Israeli soldier was kidnapped in June by Palestinian gunmen.
Army sources said they were looking for facilities used by militants and fired on gunmen who tried to attack them. More than 200 Palestinians have been killed.

The Israelis say that they struck at a gathering of armed men who were moving in to attack the invading force. The Israeli military said its evening air strike had been aimed at the house of Ashraf Farawana, a Hamas leader allegedly involved in attacks on Israel and supplying weapons to Hamas militants.
Palestinian security sources said all five were members of the same family and were killed when a pilotless Israeli aircraft fired two missiles at a group of people, including gunmen. Local people said one of the adults killed was a brother of Mr Farawana, who himself survived. At least seven people were also wounded.
At least five other Palestinians were wounded in the raid, some of them in exchanges of fire with Israeli troops. The earlier attack came before dawn in Abassan, a village to the east of Khan Yunis, where troops were engaged in a search operation.
More than 230 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces since the end of June 2006. The Israelis said they had struck at a gathering of armed men who were moving in to attack their troops.
About half of those killed were civilians or not taking part in any hostilities at the time of their death, Palestinian medical sources and an Israeli human rights group have said. Five of those killed are said to be from the same family.
