Nearby highlights Epping Station is a commuter funnel, dominated by a huge car park, but it wasn't always a terminus: the Central Line used to extend to North Weald and Ongar, and you can still take a steam train to Ongar on the newly launched Epping Ongar Railway. From here, Essex is your oyster, but start with leafy Epping itself. There's a market on Mondays that has been running since 1253. Epping is also famous for its sausages, which have been sold by the marvellous Church's Butchers (224 Epping High Street, churchsbutchers.co.uk) since 1888. Best of all, you are at the northern edge of Epping Forest, an ancient woodland perfect for strolling.

Did you know? For passengers determined to get their money's worth, Epping and its distant companion West Ruislip offer the longest possible tube trip on a single train. The distance between the two is just over 34 miles (55km). But Epping goes one better than West Ruislip by offering another tube record: it has the largest public car park of any tube station. So that's your next day out sorted.
